An AI sprite sheet generator gets you from a prompt to a grid of frames. You still choose the plan whose license lets you ship, lock one base character, measure the real frame size, and slice the sheet in the engine. In Unity that means Sprite Mode Multiple plus the Sprite Editor's grid slice. In Godot it means SpriteFrames' "Add frames from a Sprite Sheet" or Sprite2D Hframes/Vframes. Of the tools we track, PixelLab, God Mode AI, and Ludo.ai document sprite-sheet export.
An AI tool can give you a sheet of frames in minutes. Getting it into a game still takes a license check, a locked base character, the right cell size, and the engine's slicing tools. This how-to walks through each step, quoting the vendors' docs and terms and Unity's and Godot's own documentation.
Not tested hands-on. Untested (docs, terms, and pricing quotes only). The exception is PixelLab: we tested its free trial on Oct 22, 2026 (about 9 of 40 generations; paid tiers not tested), and the results are described in the steps below and on the PixelLab review. We have not used God Mode AI or Ludo.ai, and we did not run these imports in Unity or Godot ourselves. The Unity and Godot steps cite the engines' own docs.

Prices and free tiers are quoted from each vendor's pricing page or FAQ. The commercial-use badge links to each tool's license page. Generations and credits are the vendors' own units and don't compare one to one.
Nine steps. Steps 1 to 4 apply to any tool, steps 5 and 6 are Unity, steps 7 and 8 are Godot, and step 9 applies before release.
Do this before you spend credits, because the answer differs by tool and plan. PixelLab's pricing page lists commercial use on the free trial as well as paid tiers, and its terms say you own the copyright to what you make. The one exception is that you can't use the output to train other models. God Mode AI says commercial licensing is included with your subscription. That subscription is sold as "up to 200 public generations", and we couldn't find what "public" covers. We also haven't verified its ownership terms. Ludo.ai's FAQ says whoever runs the generation owns the result and can monetize it. We haven't checked Ludo's terms page itself, so our Ludo commercial-use row stays unverified. Free-plan Ludo sheets are watermarked on every frame. Subscribing removes the watermark, including on sheets you already made.

Generate a single still of the character first, then animate that still instead of prompting each animation from scratch. Ludo's FAQ gives this advice directly. PixelLab's character tool turns one character into 4 or 8 directional views. Its rotate tool accepts 128x128, 64x64, 32x32, and 16x16 canvases. Choose the size before you start. In our Oct 22 PixelLab free-trial test, the same prompt at 64x64 and at 32x32 gave two different-looking knights. Changing the size later can mean starting the character over.

PixelLab's Characters page adds walk, run, idle, and other animations and exports sprite sheets or individual frames. Its separate text-prompt animation tool needs a 64x64 canvas and at least Tier 1. God Mode AI takes a character image and an action, covers side-scrolling, isometric (8 directions), and top-down views, and downloads sprite sheets or MP4. It also publishes a tutorial on downloading sheets with a transparent background. Ludo's Sprite Generator outputs one PNG with every frame on a grid, plus an optional JSON descriptor. If your engine has an importer for that JSON, keep it. Otherwise slice the grid.

Take the cell size from the exported image (sheet width divided by the number of columns), not from the size you asked for. In our PixelLab test the character was 32x32, but the walk frames came out on a 48x48 canvas. Slicing that sheet at 32 would have cut each frame in the wrong place. For pixel art, scale with nearest-neighbour only. Ludo's own pixel-art guide exports that way.

Expand the sliced texture in the Project window, select the frames for one animation, and drop them into the Scene. Unity adds an Animator and creates an Animation Clip from the selected sprites. Steam counts art made with AI tools during development and shipped in the game as Pre-Generated content, so it goes in the content survey. PixelLab's terms also bind you to the Open RAIL-M license and bar using its output to train other models without permission. Keep a note of which tool and plan made each sheet.

In our PixelLab walk-cycle test (6 frames, free trial), the knight stayed on-model in every frame, but the legs barely moved, so it read as shuffling in place. It also generated only one direction. Plan to clean up frames by hand or reroll before you ship.
