Best AI tileset generators for games: formats & license

In short

Three AI tools make game tilesets, and they hand you different things. PixelLab builds a connected Wang tileset from two terrain prompts and exports Wang, dual-grid 15-tile and 3x3 layouts, but tilesets need its $12/mo Tier 1. Retro Diffusion makes a full wang tileset from one prompt, pay-per-use, with SpriteFusion export. Ludo.ai makes loose tiles in top-down, side-scrolling or isometric views, including animated tiles, and leaves the autotile rules to you. All three say you can use the tiles in a commercial game. Godot terrain and Unity Rule Tile steps follow, quoted from the engines' docs.

AI tileset generators differ less on the art than on what they hand you: a connected autotile set or a pile of loose tiles. That decides how much setup your engine needs. This guide quotes each vendor's docs, pricing and terms, plus Godot's and Unity's manuals, for the formats, the cost, the license, and the import steps.

Not tested hands-on. We have not tested these tileset tools hands-on. On our Oct 22, 2026 PixelLab free trial the tileset tools were locked behind a subscription, so we have no tileset output of our own to show. We have not used Retro Diffusion, Ludo.ai or Sprite Fusion. Every feature, price and license line is a verbatim quote from the vendor's docs, pricing page, FAQ, terms or GitHub README, or from Godot and Unity docs, fetched on 2026-10-29. Our daily job re-checks that each quote is still on its page.

Prices and limits are the vendor's own wording as of the check date under each cell. Generations, balance and credits are not comparable across vendors. "Free plan" says what you can do without paying; the license section covers whether you can ship it.

Can you ship the tiles? License, tool by tool

All three say you can use tiles in a commercial game. The differences are in free plans and in what the vendor keeps.

  • PixelLab: commercial on every plan, but tilesets need Tier 1

PixelLab lists commercial use on the free trial and says you own the rights, except for training models on the output. That does not help with tiles on the trial: Create Tileset needs at least Tier 1, and the trial card lists map tools as not included.

Wang, dual-grid, 3x3: what the layout means for autotiling

The tile art is half the job. The other half is the rules that pick the right edge or corner tile as you paint. Here is what each tool hands you and what each engine expects.

  • PixelLab and Retro Diffusion hand you a connected set

PixelLab builds a connectable Wang tileset from two terrains and exports Wang, dual-grid 15-tile and 3x3 layouts. Retro Diffusion makes a full wang tileset from one prompt. Both are sets meant to be wired into autotile rules, not loose tiles.

  • Godot 4: terrain sets and three match modes

Godot replaces Godot 3 autotiles with terrains, which can transition between terrains because a tile can define several at once. Each terrain set uses Match Corners and Sides, Match Corners, or Match Sides, which Godot says correspond to the old 2×2, 3×3 and 3×3 minimal bitmask modes. Pick the mode that matches the layout you exported.

Sprite Fusion is a free tilemap editor with a built-in auto tile system that needs no account. It says it natively supports PixelLab tilesets, and Retro Diffusion builds in SpriteFusion export. It exports Unity packages and Godot scenes. Sprite Fusion is not in our tool ledger; these lines are from its homepage.

Step by step: an AI tileset into Godot 4 or Unity

Nine steps. Steps 1 and 2 apply to both engines, 3 to 5 are Godot, 6 to 8 are Unity, and step 9 skips engine setup. We built them from the vendor and engine docs quoted under each step, not from a project we ran.

  1. Step 1. Fix the tile size before you generate

PixelLab Standard tiles are 16, 24 (top-down beta) or 32 px; Retro Diffusion's API tilesets are 16–32 px. In Godot, Texture Region Size is the size of each tile on the atlas and should usually match the TileMapLayer tile size. Generate at the size your map uses.

  2. Step 2. Keep the pixels crisp on import

In Godot, use the Nearest texture filter, which reads from the nearest pixel only, and Lossless compression, which Godot recommends for pixel art. In Unity, set Filter Mode to Point and Pixels Per Unit to the tile's pixel size.

  3. Step 3. Godot: add the sheet to a TileSet atlas

Create a TileSet on a TileMapLayer and drag the tilesheet onto the TileSet panel. Answer Yes when asked to create tiles automatically; Godot cuts them at the tile size you set in the TileSet.

  4. Step 4. Godot: create a terrain set and paint peering bits

Terrains need at least one terrain set with a terrain in it. Choose the match mode, then set each tile's peering bits, which decide which tile is placed based on its neighbours.

    Quotes behind this (3)
  5. Step 5. Godot: paint with Connect or Path

In the TileMap terrain tools, Connect is easier, while Path gives more artist control while painting.

    Quotes behind this (1)
  6. Step 6. Unity: build a Tile Palette

Create a tile palette from your sprites, then paint onto a Tilemap from the Tile Palette window.

    Quotes behind this (1)
  7. Step 7. Unity: make a Rule Tile for the terrain

Add the 2D Tilemap Extras Rule Tile, then add one rule per edge or corner sprite and set each of the 8 neighbours to This, Not This or Don't Care. Use the Isometric or Hexagonal Rule Tile for those grids.

    Quotes behind this (4)
  8. Step 8. Unity: order rules and add variation

Rule Tile checks rules from the top of the list, so order matters. For variety on plain fill tiles, set a rule's Output to Random. Then paint with the Rule Tile like any other tile.

  9. Step 9. Or skip engine setup with Sprite Fusion

If your set came from PixelLab or Retro Diffusion, Sprite Fusion's free editor can autotile it and export a Unity package or Godot scene.

When tiles don't match

What the vendors say to do when a tile clashes with its neighbours.

  • Regenerate against a style reference (Ludo.ai)

Ludo.ai suggests Generate with Style with a tile you like as the reference, so new tiles take its palette and rendering. For animated tiles that must keep their edges, use Forge or Forge Pixel, since its other models do not preserve the seam.

  • Chain terrains instead of generating them separately (PixelLab)

PixelLab's MCP tools can chain multiple terrains together rather than generating each pair of terrains on its own.

    • Generate Wang tilesets for seamless terrain transitions. Chain multiple terrains together.

  • Budget for retries

A PixelLab tileset costs several generations, though failed jobs aren't charged. Retro Diffusion's API has a free cost check, which it calls authoritative.

Editorial opinion

Our pick: which tileset generator for which job

  • Pick PixelLab if you want a ready-made autotile layout: it exports Wang, dual-grid 15-tile and 3x3 sets for top-down and platformer terrain, and Sprite Fusion reads its tilesets directly. You need Tier 1 ($12/mo); on our Oct 22 free trial the tileset tools were locked, so we have not tested its tilesets.
  • Pick Retro Diffusion if you want pay-per-use wang tilesets with SpriteFusion export, an API, and terms that give you free-balance output too. Untested by us.
  • Pick Ludo.ai if you need isometric blocks, animated tiles, or many matching tiles in one of 32 styles and are happy to write the terrain rules in Godot, Unity or Tiled yourself. Expect to regenerate tiles that clash. Untested by us.
  • Pick Sprite Fusion (free editor) as the step between generator and engine if you'd rather not set up Godot terrains or Unity Rule Tiles by hand. It is free and needs no account.

Picks are our opinion from the quoted docs, pricing pages and terms. We have not tested any of these tileset tools hands-on: PixelLab's were locked on our free trial, and we have not used Retro Diffusion, Ludo.ai or Sprite Fusion.

FAQ

What is the best AI tileset generator for games?
For a connected autotile set, PixelLab: it exports Wang, dual-grid 15-tile and 3x3 layouts, but needs a $12/mo plan. For pay-per-use, Retro Diffusion makes full wang tilesets from one prompt. For loose tiles in top-down, side-scrolling or isometric views, including animated ones, Ludo.ai. We haven't tested any of their tilesets.

Can I make a tileset with AI for free?
Not on PixelLab's free trial, which leaves out map tools; Create Tileset needs Tier 1. Retro Diffusion gives new accounts free balance and says free-usage output is yours, though it may be public. Ludo.ai is free to try, but free sprite sheet downloads are watermarked.

Do AI tilesets work with Godot 4 terrains?
Yes, once you set them up. Add the sheet to a TileSet atlas, create a terrain set, pick Match Corners and Sides, Match Corners or Match Sides, and paint the peering bits for each tile. Godot says those modes correspond to Godot 3's 2×2, 3×3 and 3×3 minimal bitmasks.

Can I use an AI tileset with Unity Rule Tiles?
Yes. A Rule Tile (2D Tilemap Extras) picks a sprite from rules you set on a 3x3 neighbour box, and there are variants for hexagonal and isometric grids. You build the rules yourself, one per edge or corner sprite.

Can I sell a game that uses AI-generated tiles?
All three vendors say yes on the plans quoted here: PixelLab says you own the output except for training models, Retro Diffusion assigns you output rights, and Ludo.ai says you own the tiles, including for commercial games. On Steam, disclose them as pre-generated AI content.
