MCP for game engines: Unity, Godot & Blender setup

In short

An MCP server lets a coding agent such as Claude Code or Cursor drive a running editor. For Unity there is Unity's own MCP mode in the free Unity CLI (the old in-editor MCP server is deprecated) and the MIT-licensed MCP for Unity from Coplay. For Godot there are two MIT community servers, Coding-Solo/godot-mcp and hi-godot/godot-ai. For Blender there is an official GPL-3.0 server from Blender Lab and the MIT community MCP for Blender. All of them let the agent change your project, and the Blender ones run AI-written Python, so the security section matters as much as the install steps.

An MCP server lets your coding agent drive the editor itself: open scenes, edit scripts, run the game, read the errors. Unity, Godot and Blender each have an official or popular community server, and they differ on engine version, setup and how much they guard your machine. This guide quotes each server's docs and license, plus Claude Code's and Cursor's MCP docs, for the install steps and the risks.

Not tested hands-on. We have not tested any of these MCP servers hands-on (untested): we did not install them in a Unity, Godot, or Blender project, and we don't rank how well the agent works. Everything here is built from verbatim quotes we copied on 2026-10-30 from Unity's CLI and plugin docs, the Coplay MCP for Unity docs and repo, the Coding-Solo/godot-mcp and hi-godot/godot-ai READMEs, Blender Lab's MCP Server page and license, the ahujasid MCP for Blender README and license, Anthropic's Claude Code MCP docs, Cursor's MCP docs, and the MCP specification's security page. Our daily job re-checks that each quote is still on its page. We don't quote GitHub star counts, because they change daily.

Only tools in our ledger get a table row; the Godot and Blender servers are covered in the sections below with their own quotes. Prices are copied from vendor pricing pages on the fetch date shown under each quote. The MCP servers themselves are free; what costs money is the agent you connect to them.

Which MCP servers exist for each engine

Six servers across three engines, with each one's requirements as its own docs state them.

  • Unity (official): MCP mode in the Unity CLI

Unity deprecated the MCP server that shipped inside the in-editor AI assistant package; the Unity CLI replaces it. Unity says the CLI's MCP mode is not part of the deprecation and remains fully supported. Unity also says its plain CLI commands are faster and use fewer tokens than MCP if your agent can run shell commands. Driving a running Editor needs Unity 6.0 LTS or later.

    Quotes behind this (5)
  • Unity (community): MCP for Unity by Coplay

Coplay's MCP for Unity installs as a Unity package from a git URL or OpenUPM, then opens a setup wizard. It needs Unity 2021.3 LTS or newer and Python 3.10+ with uv. Unity's own migration page says third-party MCP packages from GitHub are unaffected by the deprecation.

    Quotes behind this (6)
  • Godot: Coding-Solo/godot-mcp

A Node.js server (Node.js 18 or newer and npm) that lets an agent launch the Godot editor, run projects, capture debug output, and control project execution. If it can't find Godot, set GODOT_PATH to the Godot executable.

    Quotes behind this (3)
  • Godot: hi-godot/godot-ai

An editor add-on plus a Python server that connects Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and other clients to a live Godot editor. It needs Godot 4.7+, uv, and an MCP client. GDScript is supported, but C# is text-only.

    Quotes behind this (3)
  • Blender (official): Blender Lab MCP Server

Blender Lab describes a lightweight MCP server for Blender. Blender has no built-in way to connect to LLMs, so you install an add-on, an LLM client, and the MCP server. It needs Blender 5.1 or newer, and newer clients can install it from an .mcpb bundle.

  • Blender (community): MCP for Blender by ahujasid

A third-party integration, not made by Blender. Its PyPI package was renamed from blender-mcp to mcp-for-blender. It needs Blender 3.0 or newer, Python 3.10 or newer, and uv. Its Premium option generates AI 3D models (Meshy, Hunyuan3D, Tripo, Hyper3D Rodin) in Blender without your own API keys; the ownership terms of those models are set by each generator, so check who owns AI game assets.

Step by step: connect Claude Code to Unity, Godot, or Blender

Each step is quoted from the server's own docs or from Claude Code's MCP docs. Pick the steps for your engine; steps 1 and 10 apply to all.

  1. Step 1. Decide the scope before you add a server

In Claude Code, claude mcp add writes to local scope unless you pass --scope project or --scope user. Local scope is the default and loads only in the project where you added it. Project scope writes .mcp.json, and Claude Code asks for approval before using those servers in interactive sessions.

  2. Step 2. Unity CLI: install the CLI and the pipeline package

On macOS or Linux, Unity's install script is curl -fsSL https://unity.com/install.sh | bash; check it with unity --version. Then run unity pipeline install.

    Quotes behind this (3)
  3. Step 3. Unity CLI: configure Claude Code

Run unity mcp configure claude (the client names Unity lists include claude, cursor, vscode, and windsurf). unity mcp configure --list shows every supported client and whether it is configured.

    Quotes behind this (2)
  4. Step 4. Unity CLI: optional Claude Code plugin

Unity also ships a Claude Code plugin: /plugin marketplace add Unity-Technologies/unity-agent-plugin, then /plugin install unity@unity-agent-plugin. It only ships skills and doesn't use an MCP server. Run unity status to confirm the CLI can reach the Editor.

    Quotes behind this (4)
  5. Step 5. MCP for Unity: install the package and run the wizard

In Unity, open Window > Package Manager, Add package from git URL, and paste https://github.com/CoplayDev/unity-mcp.git?path=/MCPForUnity#main (or openupm add com.coplaydev.unity-mcp). The setup wizard opens after import; pick your clients and click Configure Selected. Claude Code auto-connects after configuration. The server's default local URL is http://localhost:8080/mcp.

    Quotes behind this (7)
  6. Step 6. Godot (godot-mcp): one command

Run claude mcp add godot -- npx @coding-solo/godot-mcp, then restart Claude Code. In Claude Code, the -- separates Claude's own options from the command that runs the server.

  7. Step 7. Godot (godot-ai): enable the add-on and press Configure

Install the add-on, enable it under Project > Project Settings > Plugins > Godot AI, then press Configure next to your client in the Godot AI dock. CLI-configured clients default to global user scope, and Claude Code needs a one-time approval from claude run inside the project.

    Quotes behind this (4)
  8. Step 8. Blender (official): install the add-on and the server

Drag the add-on into Blender twice: once to add the Blender Lab repository, once to install the add-on. Then install the MCP server in your client, from the .mcpb bundle if your client supports it.

    Quotes behind this (2)
    • If you drag & drop into Blender you will need to do it twice .

      Verified · fetched 2026-10-30 · blender.org/lab/mcp-server/
  9. Step 9. Blender (MCP for Blender): add the server and the add-on

Run claude mcp add blender uvx mcp-for-blender, then uvx mcp-for-blender install-addon, and enable Interface: MCP for Blender under Edit > Preferences > Add-ons. Run only one instance of the server, not one per client.

    Quotes behind this (4)
  10. Step 10. Check the connection

claude mcp list shows a health status for each server, and /mcp inside Claude Code shows server status.

Security: what these servers can do to your machine

Every server here lets an AI agent change your project. Some run arbitrary code. These are the warnings and guards the docs themselves state.

  • Blender servers run AI-written Python

Blender Lab warns that its server will execute LLM-generated code in Blender without guards against your data being removed or sent to a remote location, and recommends a virtual machine or a system without sensitive information. MCP for Blender says its execute_blender_code tool runs arbitrary Python and tells you to save your work first.

  • Unity: localhost-only by default

Unity's CLI pipeline server accepts connections on localhost only. Coplay's MCP for Unity binds to loopback by default, and its remote-hosted mode requires an API key.

    Quotes behind this (3)
  • Godot AI confines writes to the project

godot-ai says writes stay inside your project and that project.godot, override.cfg and .godot/ are off-limits. It also says you use it at your own risk.

  • General MCP risks

The MCP specification warns that local servers may have direct access to your system and be reachable by other processes, and recommends launching them with restricted file-system and network access. Claude Code's docs say to verify you trust each server, because servers that fetch external content can expose you to prompt injection.

    Quotes behind this (3)
  • Telemetry you can switch off

godot-ai lets you opt out with GODOT_AI_DISABLE_TELEMETRY=true or DISABLE_TELEMETRY=true, or in the editor. MCP for Blender turns off all telemetry, including its minimal anonymous usage record, with an environment variable.

Editorial opinion

Our pick: which MCP server for which engine

  • Pick Unity CLI MCP mode You are on Unity 6 or later and want Unity's supported route; it's free, local-only, and configures Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, or Windsurf with one command.
  • Pick MCP for Unity (Coplay) You are on a Unity version older than 6 (it supports 2021.3 LTS and newer), or want an MIT server with a setup wizard and 50 MCP tool entrypoints.
  • Pick godot-ai You are on Godot 4.7+ and want the agent to edit scenes and scripts in the live editor, with project-confined writes.
  • Pick godot-mcp (Coding-Solo) You want a one-line Node.js setup that runs projects and returns debug output, or your Godot version is older than the 4.7 that godot-ai needs.
  • Pick Blender Lab MCP Server You are on Blender 5.1+ and want the official server; run it in a VM or on a machine without sensitive data.
  • Pick MCP for Blender (ahujasid) You want a one-command setup for Claude Code or Cursor, or Blender older than 5.1; turn on safe mode.

These picks are our editorial opinion, based on the quoted docs, READMEs and licenses above. We have not tested any of these servers hands-on (untested), and we don't rank how well agents perform with them.

FAQ

Is Unity's MCP server deprecated?
The MCP server inside the in-editor AI assistant package is deprecated and replaced by the Unity CLI. The CLI's MCP mode is not part of the deprecation and remains fully supported, and third-party MCP packages from GitHub are unaffected.

Is there an official Blender MCP server?
Yes. Blender Lab publishes an MCP Server that needs Blender 5.1 or newer, under GPL-3.0. The popular MCP for Blender by ahujasid is a separate third-party MIT project, not made by Blender.
Sources (5)
Is it safe to let an AI agent control Blender?
Both Blender servers let the AI run Python in Blender. Blender Lab says its server has no guards against data removal or exfiltration and recommends a virtual machine. MCP for Blender offers a safe mode (BLENDER_MCP_SAFE_MODE=1) and warns its socket has no authentication.
